A Brief History ...In 1976, a site selection study was initiated by the county and the current airport site was identified. Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport was constructed between 1979 and 1981 on 435 acres. Dow Chemical Company donated half of the land and the county purchased the other half. The initial airport was impressive for its time with a then 6,000 foot runway, parallel taxiway, airfield lighting and a precision instrument approach. Over time. the Dow Chemical fleet of aircraft changed to include larger aircraft and in order to accommodate those needs, a 1,000 foot extension ot the runway was constructed in 1995 and then revitalized and reconstructed with grooved concrete in 2009.
